The company and its aims

Newark Carnival is set up as a Community Interest Company, or CIC as they are widely known. A CIC is a social enterprise - in this case Newark Carnival - who wishes to use its profits for the public good and solely for the benefit of the local community.

Community Interest Companies were introduced for one sole reason. Other types of company (for example: LTD, PLC) were not right for an organisation of this type; thus the CIC being introduced by the government with the aim of supporting this flourishing sector. A CIC is different because it cannot make a profit in any form.

So, what will CICs do? According to the CIC regulator "CICs will be organisations pursuing social objectives, such as environmental improvement, community transport, fair trade etc. Social enterprises are playing an increasing role in regenerating disadvantaged areas, empowering local communities and delivering new, innovative services at local level."

The Carnival committee, and indeed the company, is made up of Directors. As with a normal company, there are main directors. Newark Carnival CIC has three Directors: Rachel Brown (Chairperson), June Rowlands (Company Secretary) and Elaine Ellison (Treasurer). There are four Executive Directors in supporting roles on the Committee, each responsible for their own area: Stuart Graham (Marketing Director), Carolyn Drury (Artistic Director), Andrew Jackson (Logistics Director) and Claire McFarlane (Community Liaison Officer).
