Best of British

This year’s theme is Best of British, celebrating all that’s good about living in the UK. There’s loads of ideas you could use to dress your float, and here we’ve compiled a few to get you started:

British Royalty

From King George to Queen Victoria and of course Queen Elizabeth, think about how you could use Britain’s historic monarchy in your float. Dress in royal costumes and wear hats and crowns.

British Food

Why not try using hats with fish and chip wrappers with paper outfits to match? Alternatively you could think about using the traditional English breakfast as a theme – using bacon, eggs and sausage (perhaps not real ones!). British beer could also be a good idea, using barrels, beers and tankards (again, not real beer).

River Trent

Use a river theme and think of the River Trent. Alternatively think of the Royal Navy and sailors, boats, captains and barges. Think of what wildlife you see along the river: birds, fish, insects.

British Animals

How about the British Bulldog or British butterflies? You could try a typical English ‘game’ theme and use pheasants, fox hunting or other country pursuits.

Floral Theme

The English Rose, daisies, geraniums, sweet peas, hydrangea and many more.

Think about how Britain welcomes those from abroad

Britain welcomes people from all countries who want to come and live and work here. Indian, Chinese, Polish, Italian, African – think about their costumes, music, foods and how they integrate with British society.

Famous Landmarks

Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Angel of the North – the list goes on. There are many famous landmarks in London and the rest of the UK to consider using in your float.

Pantomimes

Characters from Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella perhaps?

Childhood Memories

Sea Cadets, Brownies, Rainbows, Cubs, Beavers

British Forces

Our forces are widely regarded to be the best in the world. Think of how you could use interesting uniforms and world events to portray our forces in the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force.

Use your imagination

Be creative. Use recycled materials, papers, plastics, ribbons and junk. Look around in your loft – you will be surprised what can be used.

Remember the dance and music

Come up with a dance or a song to sing. Find appropriate music to play and blast it out loud. We need a lively Carnival to get us into the Jubilee party spirit and make Newark proud to be British.
